Well Worn

When she was eight the Covvie attacked her home. There were people and there was screaming and she remembered so much blood. There had been soldiers and huge men in suits of armor with pieces almost as big as her. One of the soldiers had grabbed her out from under the table and carried her away kicking and screaming and the only thing she had been able to grab as he carried her, tears in her eyes, was a book.

Not her doll. Not a picture. Not a scrap of cloth. Not even a lock of hair that she thinks she remembers a vibrant red from the body that had been cold while it was wrapped around her.

Even now she kept it with her. The language was old, stilted really, but what would one expect of prose back from the twentieth century? Every few days she would sit down and read it from cover to cover just to remind herself.

She always wondered if it was her mother’s, or her father’s, or maybe she had or has a sibling out there that she didn’t remember. Which of them had loved spy novels enough to go far enough back to read James Bond? Who had loved it?

Maybe, she couldn’t help but think so many nights as she rested on her bunk, she shouldn’t have read it. Her fingers brushed over the well worn binding of the thing under her pillow. Things like that book could change you. Had changed her. Would never stop changing her.

A light went on in the corner. A brief flashing light that was the precursor to her alarm.

She had to get up. Had to eat. Had to get ready. They were heading into the scrapyard to catch the ‘Insurrectionists’ today.

Another day of the same old lies.

She wished she had grabbed something else

Summary: How had he ended up here? Aiden Price had believed in the wrong people, made the wrong choices, and he’d been punished for it. But here and now, before one Malcolm Hargrove and with the chance to reclaim all he had lost before him, there was a decision to be made.

How far would he go, what agreements would he make to set his life right?

Long ago I had this theory that perhaps the ‘wrong people’ the Counselor mentioned believing in back in S13E7 might be a different party altogether and spun out the idea of how things might play out if he had the chance to confront those individuals.

This story thus exists in an AU post the death of Sharkface, with Aiden being taken to the Staff of Charon rather than being left on the Tartarus to his fate. Would take place sometime between Episodes 16 and 18.

Also known as the story that made me love writing Price. He’s so in his head.

The Temporal Location of the MoI Crash Related to The Blood Gulch Chronicles

Okay, nope, still on this ‘MOI crashed twelve years before BGC’ point, and I have to say Nope. It’s just not possible. If you set aside the fact that Church, Texas, and all of the other AI fragments (save those in storage) would have been rampant and dead long before BGC because of this span, there are a few hints we can take from just the little sneak peaks of the coming guide book that debunk that fast.

Here we see the only bit of canon (take with a grain of salt as the paragraph prefacing it notes that this is a relative timeline based on the all important event of Alpha’s arrival at Blood Gulch, and is fallible) available, the 12 years doesn’t make sense. Why is that?

Seventeen years before Alpha’s arrival in Blood Gulch, the Director has JUST acquired his doctorate in AI Theory. While it is possible that someone could start a military research program and take lead on it that shortly after achieving a degree, we know this isn’t possible, because of Carolina’s age. Carolina, born 29 years before BGC means she was only twelve when her father got his degree. As we know Carolina at LEAST has to be of enlisting age to be in the program, that means you’d need at least another six years to get her to eighteen. That puts PFL starting an absolute maximum of eleven years before BGC.

Why is it less time than that, though, if we want to ignore rampancy (which we shouldn’t)? I have heard it mentioned that Burnie actually gave an age range of the Freelancers during an interview or Q&A (could someone point me at that or references to that? daftprodigy maybe you would know?). I have heard his age range was mid-twenties to thirties with one older and one younger. A lot younger I think (Tex or Washington as younger, probably Wyoming or Maine as older). If this is true, then we could pop Carolina’s estimated age at the time of PFL up to about twenty-five, which would PFL at about four years before BGC. This makes more reasonable sense because then she would not only have had time IN the army, but time to prove her skill and earn rank enough to not only get that top position in canon, but have the skills of a leader. We could even bump this down a bit and have her at Twenty-two when PFL starts, which still puts us at least seven years out from the start of BGC.

Consider how far the program got. Consider how long it would take to train normal soldiers to use advanced armor to that degree. How long it would take to get access to the tech the Director needed. I’d say PFL was at least at the year and a half mark before the crash, probably more like two or three because you don’t start with ops on this sort of work. You take time, you train, you prepare before that. As such I’d put PFL, at max (if you assume Carolina was mid twenties), at starting about four years before BGC, and if you tie in how long the program was active, you’d probably have the crash, at earliest, two years pre-Blood Gulch.

Anyway, that’s just my piecemeal construction of a rough timeline, which is going to be a bit more set in stone when the book comes out, but do remember the book’s timeline itself says it is fallible. A bit. Just not to a degree that puts the MOI down twelve years before BGC.

Because if nothing else, AI rampancy is a thing, and should be considered in all calculations (even though Alpha and his fragmentation would have given him SOME time, it wouldn’t have given him the seventeen plus years he would have needed for a far earlier MOI crash).
